Optimized spend and growth strategy showing how businesses can stop underperforming spending and reallocate resources

Case Study:
Turning Legacy Marketing Spend into a Growth Strategy

Challenge

A third-generation, multi-million-dollar company had grown from a traditional “mom-and-pop” operation into a successful regional business, but growth had stalled. Leadership wanted to capture more sales in their existing market, expand into new markets and adopt new technologies without significantly increasing the marketing budget.

Assessment

Evaluated the marketing department's activities, tactics, spend and results to identify where resources were and where they were not producing value. This uncovered significant opportunities to redirect existing dollars toward higher-impact activities.

Alignment

Marketing and leadership aligned around a new principle: marketing investments needed to demonstrate measurable value rather than continue simply because they were legacy practices. Establishing greater autonomy for marketing also reduced leadership involvement in tactical decisions that were limiting growth.

Implementation

Established a Start / Stop / Increase / Test approach, measuring each marketing activity and using results to determine where to invest, reduce or eliminate spending. A/B testing and ongoing measurement allowed the team to make decisions based on performance rather than assumptions.

Results

The company drove an increase in targeted sales and awareness while maintaining a nearly flat marketing budget.

  • Reallocated existing marketing dollars toward higher-potential opportunities

  • Eliminated or reduced spending on underperforming tactics

  • Created capacity to pursue higher-yield markets

  • Established measurable performance expectations for marketing

  • Increased marketing's strategic impact without significantly increasing spend

  • Freed leadership to focus more on broader growth opportunities

Key Insight

Growth doesn't always require more resources. It often requires better allocation of the resources a corporation already has. By challenging legacy practices and measuring what actually works, organizations can create capacity for growth without simply adding cost.
